21st Annual Smithsonian Magazine Photo Contest People
Women Leisure

Shershabadi women are using the craft of embroidery as a potential source to gain economic independence while blurring the boundary between labour and leisure. The embroidery skills themselves are more than 500 years old and has been passed down from mothers to dauhters, generation after generation. Moreover, the fact that the craft is exclusively practiced by the women of the Shershabadi community of Kishanganj in Bihar has led to a unique bond of sisterhood among the womenfolk.
