Worker selecting tobacco leaves in a small company

In Spain, the culture of tobacco is represented in Extremadura with more than 95% of national production; the basins of the Tiétar, Alagón and Jerte Rivers, concentrate most of the crops. Thousands of families live, directly or indirectly, from this plant but the number has been reduced by lobbies power, new varieties and mechanical processes. It has moved from thousands of producers in the Community since decades, to just 3,000 today.
