In a much awaited sighting at the Sanjay Gandhi National Park in Mumbai, the Atlas moth, considered the world’s largest moth in terms of wingspan at 9 to 12 inches, emerged from its cocoon in the monsoon of 2016. The sheer size of these moths can expose them to predators like birds; but nature has equipped them with a defense plan. The tips of their wings resemble the profile of a cobra’s head. This act of mimicry scares the birds away, and the moths get to live another day. Images of charismatic species like this Atlas moth can help present them as ambassadors of forest ecosystems. As long as forests like the Sanjay Gandhi National Park are left undisturbed from anthropogenic activities, we can expect nature’s marvels to reveal themselves year after year.
