14th Annual Smithsonian Magazine Photo Contest Natural World
Zambezi Valley

In early August I have been to the Lower Zambezi area, photographing wildlife for a week. There is a high density of game and huge groups of elephants are wandering along the shores of Zambezi River. Wildlife numbers are pretty stable in the lower Zambezi region, because huge parts of the land on either side (Zimbabwe as well as Zambia) is protected in National Parks, Wildlife and Game Management areas, although poaching is still an issue.
